WHY BONNIE BIO

At Bonnie Bio, sustainability isn’t a buzzword. It’s our foundation. We’re guided by the Brundtland definition of Sustainable Development: meeting today’s needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet theirs. That belief shapes everything we do, and we partner with like-minded people, businesses and industries who share our commitment to creating real, lasting change.

All of our compostable products are internationally certified and meet the highest global standards, including EN 13432, AS 5810 and ASTM D6400.

While Bonnie Bio is dedicated to caring for the planet, our sister brand, The Kindness Co., focuses on caring for people. The Kindness Co. offers natural, plant-based alternatives such as insect repellents and stain removers, products designed to be effective, gentle and kind.

We’re a young, dynamic company, constantly growing and evolving our product ranges across both brands. Today, we supply Bonnie Bio and The Kindness Co. products to major retailers throughout South Africa, as well as leading hospitality establishments nationwide.

HOW COMPOSTING WORKS

Composting is a natural process where organic materials break down with the help of microorganisms in oxygen-rich conditions. As these tiny microbes get to work, they generate heat, which helps speed up decomposition and allows materials to return safely to the environment.

This process happens in stages as conditions change, with different microbes becoming active at different times. By the end of composting, the original material has been broken down into simple, natural components that can be absorbed back into the earth.

How quickly composting happens depends on a few key factors, including temperature, moisture and airflow. Conditions that are too hot, too cold, too wet or too dry can slow things down by limiting microbial activity.

Size also matters. Smaller materials break down faster than larger ones. Bonnie Bio products compost just like garden waste, and their breakdown rate is influenced by the same natural conditions, ensuring a responsible and earth-friendly return to nature. By choosing Bonnie Bio, you’re choosing products designed to work with nature, not against it.

CERTIFIED COMPOSTABLE MEANING

Certified compostable means that products will break down by 90% within 90 days in their regulated environments as tested to get the certification. Home compostable means the product will breakdown at a lower temperature (25-30° Celsius) compared to non-home compostable / industrial compostable products need higher temperatures (60° Celsius and higher) to break down within the defined time frame.

If a product is compostable, it means that nature / the environment can process the product back to natural ingredients (water, biomass etc). Any product that is not compostable means that nature or the environment cannot fully process the product back to natural ingredients. There will always be some form of toxic footprint left behind in the environment from non-compostable products.

HOW TO DISPOSE OF OUR PRODUCTS

Our products are designed to decompose in home composting systems or in open or turned landfills. Please be mindful of what you place inside our bags, as the contents may not be biodegradable.

All outer packaging is printed using eco-solvent inks. Please recycle where possible or dispose of it in the appropriate recycling bin.

Compostable products break down into natural elements without releasing harmful toxins. Unlike traditional plastic, they don’t linger in the environment for hundreds of years and instead return to nature with the help of heat, oxygen and microbial activity.

Most compostable products require industrial facilities, but Bonnie Bio’s refuse range is certified for home composting and verified by COPCO, giving you confidence that what you’re choosing is genuinely compostable.
